The Power of a Melody

Music is my constant companion. I am thankful that Jesus chose to connect with His church through worship. He inhabits the praises of His people. He is glorified through the songs we sing.
Corey Russell, a favorite pastor of mine, told of a time when he preached on hell. His hearers responded well. However, they responded far greater when worship followed. Misty Edwards led worship after his message and sang these simple lyrics:

"You owe me nothing, and I deserve hell.
You owe me nothing, but You've given me mercy."

After Misty sang these two lines, the congregation raised their hands and tears streamed along the cheeks of every worshiper. Corey realized his eloquent words couldn't stir emotions because they lacked a melody. Worship, songs, and music have a special power.
It isn't mystical. It doesn't make preaching inferior. It only makes it different.
Recently, I have wondered what makes one worship song more moving than another. I use to prefer songs with better lyrics. Most people suggest that today's worship songs lack conviction and power. Some believers want us to return to the hymns of old. They think our songs are too weak and need more depth. As I consider this critique, I have come to a conclusion. It comes down to the worshiper, not the song.

But, I could be wrong.
