Recently, my conceptions on the use of scripture has changed. I use to fear that I wouldn't be prepared for the end times if I didn't diligently read scripture. I was taught that I wouldn't be able to properly discern God's true nature outside of scripture. I also mocked society for not knowing basic biblical trivia like: what are the ten commandments or who were the twelve disciples. I was heart sick when fellow Christians didn't know certain Biblical concepts. I thought this meant that the church was failing, and people were "falling away from the faith". I don't believe these lies anymore. I view the Bible differently. I view it through the lenses of grace.
The Bible's overarching message overpowers the scattered facts! God tells us in His word that He came to save sinners. "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast." It isn't how much you know. It isn't how good you follow God's law. It isn't how much you study His word. It is through grace by faith in His promise. That is the GOOD NEWS!
I say all that to say this! We read scripture to learn the Gospel. We read scripture to learn about the redemption message. We don't have to exhaust the pages with highlighters and theological analysis to be saved. We are blessed when we seek the wisdom and knowledge of God! But, it isn't required of us! Therefore, it is sin to require it of others.
I am sharing this in a blog because I fear some incorrectly promote the Bible. The Bible is a tool to share the Gospel, but I don't think it is something to obsess over. If you want to obsess over something, obsess over God's Spirit as a person. Talk to Him, instead of reading about Him.
I believe the Bible is fully inspired. I believe it was written by God. I believe it leads us to live Godly lives. However, I don't think it should be used as a ball and chain. I don't think we have to know it backwards and forwards to impress Christ. It is a wealth of wisdom. It is food to my soul. It radiates the very power of God. However, it isn't meant to make Pharisee of us. It is also not above the Spirit. The Spirit leads us to all truth, and He has authority that supersedes the pages of scripture. He can move us and teach us without the written word. Read the word! I encourage you, but don't make it your master out of obligation or fear.
The Spirit should get more glory than the Bible. If we talk more about scripture than the Spirit, I fear we are not serving Him well.
