Mission trips are not my "thing". My approach to evangelism and service is different than the missionary. I prefer to leave salvation to the Holy Spirit, so I rarely sign up for the Spring Mission Trip or walk with the Street Evangelism Team. That isn't to say that I disapprove of such ventures. I think such outreaches are vital for church growth; nevertheless, I rarely participate in them.
However, a few nights ago I had a dream. Basically, the dream struck holy fear in me! In the dream, a classmate of mine and myself were selected to go on a short term mission. My classmate and I were both aware of the seriousness of the calling.
Today in Chapel, the speaker spoke about short term missions. I actually had forgotten about the dream until I heard his sermon. Honestly, I will only go on a mission trip if God shoves me. I believe God is supernatural, and it feels like most mission trips are more practical in nature. Again, I salute those who are faithful missionaries and support their efforts, but mission trips aren't appealing to me.
Now if the mission trip was in the Middle East, my desire would spike. I'd be packing a month before we leave.
Most American mission trips are to Spanish speaking countries, and I just don't feel like I would be effective in that environment. Send me to Jordan, Libya, Palestine, Israel, Syria! I'll go with a smile and gusto!
I have a feeling that God might be calling me to a mission trip. We'll see how that materializes. If He does call me to participate in a mission trip, He'll need to do one more thing: drag me kicking and screaming. It will be outside my comfort zone.
