If there was anything Jesus hated it was hypocrisy. Jesus was a tolerant man when it came to a woman caught in adultery, tax collectors, and taking the sin of the world on his shoulders. He rescued men from their sins, but he was violent vocal when it came to the religious leaders who preached righteousness, but didn't live righteously.
Some of my Christian counterparts can't understand how someone like me, who hates homosexuality and holds to such a high view of marriage, could allow homosexual marriage in America. Here is why that conviction rest in my bones.
It comes down to equality and hypocrisy. We claim that we must not redefine marriage. We claim it is a moral issue. We claim God has a standard, and we can't break that standard. Let's take those three claims and see if they can be held in the balance, when it comes to divorce.
1. Have we redefined marriage, when it comes to divorce.
Marriage is a contract that binds a man and women together till death, unless there is marital unfaithfulness or desertion by an unbeliever. Do we have governmental laws that redefine that contract? Yes.
2. Is divorce a moral issue?
Have we campaigned the government to change that moral law? No!
3. Have we broken a standard of faithfulness when it comes to the marriage contract.
Is God's standard being broken by heterosexuals? Yes.
Why am I addressing these three questions? Not to make a moral statement about hypocrisy alone, although that will preach. I am making a statement about EQUALITY! If we give heterosexuals the right to redefine the sacred bond of marriage, why do we deny the homosexuals that right. If we truly believe that homosexuality is a sin that must be tamed by our government, we should be active to hold the heterosexual to the same laws. The issue is equality. We are making humanity unequal and THAT is the issue. Just like whites and blacks were segregated. Just like Jews and Aryans were separated. We are giving heterosexuals the right to live in sin, but we don't allow homosexuals that same right.
I want to chide the church for her hypocrisy, but I will not judge her here because that is NOT the issue that needs to be addressed. We need to see the political problem. We are showing partiality to our heterosexual brothers and sisters because we find their behavior more acceptable. We are comfortable with divorce, but we don't like homosexuality. That is the heart of the issue. Jesus would see the inequality. Jesus would see the hypocrisy.
Why can't we give men their freedom. Didn't Paul say that the law will only convict men of their sin, but it will never save them. We need to introduce men to the Spirit of God. That is our mission. Would our world be safer without homosexual marriage? Yes. Would it be safer without divorce? Yes. Would it be safer without liars? Yes. Would it be safer without judgement? Yes. These things come when the world submits to the Spirit of God. The American government may protect my life, but it will never be the guardian of my soul.
