Simple Song

My college has chapel three days a week. I am trying to be faithful to attend. I often don't attend meetings because they happen; I attend meetings because God beckons me. Today was one such day. The chapel was a magnet, and I was a piece of metal.

Today a band, Sons of Korah, performed. They take the Psalms and put them to music. I wept. The presence of God was sweet and intimately familiar. The Psalms have always been dear to my heart. My father pastored a Reformed Presbyterian church for a short time when I was a baby. This denominations only sings the Psalms for worship. My brother-n-law pastors a church who follows this practice as well. In our contemporary culture this may sound strange or boring, but these criticisms couldn't be further from the truth.

The band's lead singer shared his heart for the Psalms: "The current worship culture can romanticize the Gospel and cause disillusionment. The Psalms are poetic, but they are also real."
(This is a paraphrase of what he said.)

This reflection is true. The Psalms address every facet of life, even the dark realities. The Psalms have laments, revelation of God's wrath, and exuberant celebrations and proclamations.

I don't hate the current worship trend, but I do believe it needs some reform. The Psalms are sacred worship songs, which need to be reintroduced into our services.
